Servant of God Fr. Potapy Emelianov 1884—1936

Peter Andrejevich Emelianov was born in 1884 in Ufa Province in a family of Orthodox peasants. As a young man he was tonsured as a monk and took the name of Potapy. He was ordained as Orthodox priest. Since the March of 1917 he was the parish priest in the village of Nizhnaya Bogdanovka near Lugansk in Ukraine. In 1918, together with the members of his parish he joined the Catholic Church. He was frequently prosecuted during the civil war. In 1927 he was arrested and sentenced to prison camp for 10 years. He served his sentence in the camp of Solovki. On 4th August 1936 he was liberated from the camp. He died on August 14th of the same year at the station Nadvojtsy in Karelia. The site of his grave is unknown. In some communities of Russian Catholics of the Eastern rite the opinion about his sanctity was kept. The faithful offer up the prayers through his mediation.

In any case Fr. Potapy was a firm and courageous confessor of the Catholic Faith. In 1932 during the interrogation he said: "The time which I have spent in captivity has not shaken up my religious convictions, I have rather become an even more convinced Catholic. And no one can be able to sway me from this." During the time of his imprisonment in the camp he always showed charity to others, and eased their sufferings.

The photograph of adult Fr. Potapy has not been found yet. The drawing is made by his photograph at the youthful age.
